Republican Party of Texas Chairman Tom Mechler has abruptly resigned his position.
As was first reported by RagingElephantsRadio.com on Thursday, our sources were telling RER that Mechler would make the announcement today.
This is the official statement posted to the RPT website:
Texas GOP Statement on the Resignation of
Chairman Tom Mechler
“Effective this Saturday, May 17, 2017, Chairman Tom Mechler will be resigning from the Republican Party of Texas for personal reasons. The State Republican Executive Committee will hold an election at our upcoming quarterly meeting on June 3rd in Austin to find an interim Chairman to fulfill the remainder of Chairman Mechler’s term.”
The names being circulated to replace Mechler are State Republican Executive Committeeman Mark Ramsey of Senatorial District 7 in Harris County, Travis County GOP Chair James Dickey, and an absolute unknown, Rick Figueroa. Figueroa is reportedly filling the role of Mechler’s choice for his successor.
Mechler’s resignation is a strange twist in Texas politics in the midst of a contentious legislative session. He was elected to a full term as chairman at the 2016 state convention – just over one year ago to the day of his announced resignation.
