Beauty and the Beast actor speaks out after backlash over gay character

The actor who plays gay character LeFou in Beauty and the Beast has spoken out after many were angered by Disney’s inclusion of a homosexual character in the live-action film.

John Gad has expressed his thoughts about the inclusive nature of the film after conservatives in Russia and the United States spoke against the inclusion of his character.

It is said that in the film, his character realises his feelings for Gaston, and the fact he is gay is made rather explicit.

“You have a character in Gaston who uses his charm offensive to whip other people into a frenzy to go and attack somebody they never met. Somebody that’s different.

“Somebody that represents a danger because [Gaston] says that he represents a danger.

“I think that theme is as relevant today as it was when Beauty and the Beast was first written 300 years ago. So that’s what I hope people take from it.”

He continued: “What I would say that this film is one of inclusiveness.
